Laser Therapy: LANAP™ for Periodontal Treatment

A significant advancement in periodontal care is the use of laser technology to help regenerate tissue. Dr. Parsons utilizes the PerioLase™ system for the Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure (LANAP™), which promotes the body’s natural healing process. Unlike traditional gum surgery, LANAP™ does not require scalpels or sutures, instead creating an optimal environment for tissue regeneration—including gums, bone, cementum, and ligaments that may have been damaged by periodontal disease.

This laser treatment specifically targets diseased gum tissue, distinguishing it by its darker color compared to healthy gums. The laser then stimulates the remaining healthy tissue, encouraging it to reattach to the bone. Because this method supports natural tissue regrowth, it significantly lowers the risk of gum disease returning compared to conventional surgery. Thanks to its precise targeting, LANAP™ provides an effective solution with minimal discomfort, reduced side effects, and a faster recovery period. Dr. Parsons pairs this treatment with a customized home care plan to ensure optimal healing and long-term oral health.

Post-Operative Care for LANAP™

To support a smooth recovery, follow these guidelines after your LANAP™ procedure:

  • You may be prescribed antimicrobial rinses or antibiotics—take all medications as directed until they are finished.
  • Limit physical activity for several hours after your procedure.
  • Most patients experience little to no discomfort after laser therapy. However, for the first 24 hours, take two (2) Advil or Motrin (Ibuprofen) every 4-6 hours, even if you are not in pain.
  • Stick to a liquid diet for the first three days post-surgery. From days 4-7, transition to soft foods like eggs, yogurt, cottage cheese, and smoothies. Avoid spicy or crunchy foods during this time.
  • To protect healing gums, avoid chewing in the treated areas for at least one week. The blood clots that form around the gums are crucial for healing—be careful not to disturb them.
  • After laser therapy, your gum tissue may change color or texture. It is normal to see gray, yellow, red, blue, or purple areas, as well as a slightly “stringy” appearance.
  • You may rinse your mouth today—use Peridex or Periogard in the morning and evening as instructed.
  • Between rinses, you can gently rinse every three hours with warm salt water (½ teaspoon of salt in 8 oz. of warm water).
  • Avoid brushing or flossing in the treated area until you receive further instructions. However, continue regular oral hygiene in the rest of your mouth.
  • Refrain from applying pressure with your tongue or cheeks to the treated area.

What to Expect After Treatment

It’s common to experience minor side effects, such as:

  • Light bleeding
  • Mild swelling
  • Tenderness or sensitivity in the teeth and gums
  • A slight medicinal taste from prescribed rinses

If you experience severe or prolonged pain, excessive bleeding, or a persistent fever, contact our office immediately at Charlotte Office Phone Number 704-544-7033.

Long-Term Healing

As your gums and bone heal, you may notice sensitivity, soreness, or slight discomfort for up to a year. This is a natural part of the regeneration process. However, if discomfort persists, it may indicate a bite imbalance that requires adjustment.
